Position Overview & Specifications

To assist in the preparation, dispensing and sale of prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines/appliances and assist with stock control, ordering and re-stocking of the dispensary.

IT skills are essential as there is a wide range of administration work required.
Other aspects of the role include:

Collection of prescription charges/checking patient exemption status
Handling prescription money and operating/balancing the till
Operation of efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the dispensary with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage of medication
Ensuring that drugs are received and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions
Taking orders for repeats and dealing with queries from patients, doctors, nurses and support staff
Using the computer to keep up to date patient records and manage repeat prescriptions
Providing cover for annual leave/sickness
Communicating effectively with patients, carers and other team members
Recognising people’s needs for alternative methods of communication and responding accordingly
Adhering to practice policies, standard operating procedures and guidance
